Five Tip Friday

Welcome to Five Tip Friday!

Each Friday, we'll post helpful tips about your BlackBerry 10 & BlackBerry Android device. From software to hardware, you can be sure to get the latest info on your device right here!

Priv Tips:

1. Bring back Pop-up Widgets after turning it off

A great feature that the Priv has brought to the table is Pop-up Widgets. Although widgets are useful on Android, sometimes a more clean look is preferred. Pop-up widgets are a clean way to show a preview of an app without fully opening it. Unfortunately, there is a way to turn this feature off for individual apps, but only one way to bring it back.

  • Hold your finger on the app that you would like the pop-up widget to reappear on
  • Drag the app to the remove section in the top right corner
  • Enter the app menu
  • Hold your finger over the same app, and drop it on your background again.

It is tedious but this seems to be the only way to bring this feature back.

2. Remove saved words in dictionary

Sometimes there is a word that you type that you dont want appearing again in the future for one reason or another. With the BlackBerry keyboard, alot of times if a word is typed once, it remembers the word, making it appear in the future as a word suggestion. Here is how to remove that word from the phones dictionary.

  • Settings
  • Language & input
  • Personal dictionary
  • Select your primary language (in my case it is English)
  • Tap the word you want removed
  • Tap the trash can in the top right corner

3. Change Default SMS app

For the Priv, I like to use the app Textra as my default SMS app because it is integrated with the Hub. Here is how to set a different SMS app as default.

  • Settings
  • More
  • Default SMS app
  • Select the preferred SMS app

BlackBerry 10 Tips:

4. Rearrange the settings menu

I am used to the settings menu on BlackBerry 10, but for those of you who may be coming from a different platform or for any other reason would like to rearrange the menu, this is how to do it.

  • Settings
  • Swipe down from the top of the screen
  • Rearrange in the top right corner
  • Drag each option where ever you prefer
  • Swipe down from the top of the screen
  • Done in the top right corner

5. Search contacts from a server

I use my Blackberry Passport for work and have outlook synced to it. None of the contacts from my outlook appear in the contacts on my phone unless I search them and then save them. This is how to do so.

  • Contacts
  • Search at the bottom center of the screen
  • Type the name you would like to search for
  • When no results appear, tap Remote Search
  • The contact will appear. Select the contact
  • Save at the bottom

Now the contact is saved to your local contacts, you will be able to search them easily, and their name will appear when they call or text.

That's it for this week's Five Tip Friday, have a great weekend #TeamBlackBerry! Be sure to keep an eye out for next weeks post!
